The Grade I listed building, 55 Broadway, located above St. James’ Park tube station where the London Tube HQ is located will be converted into residential accommodation.
TfL have deemed the building no longer fit for purpose, and once the staff relocate in 2015 the conversion will begin. Several options have been considered for this landmark building, including office space, hotel and residential. Ultimately it was considered that residential use offered fare and tax payers the most successful return, and allowed for the retention of this historic building’s character.
TfL are seeking architects to begin designs for this venture, and are considering only those who are “used to working with heritage buildings”. Mike Brown, MD for London Underground and London Rail at TfL has stated that they “recognise the historic features of the our Grade I listed building, 55 Broadway, and we need to carefully ensure that any future use enhances its features.”
TfL is anticipating the appointment of architects in October.
